Historic Devonport village is situated on a narrow peninsula, encircled by sandy East Coast beaches and the Auckland's Waitemata Harbour. With only one road leading into the peninsula, this quaint suburb feels relaxed and secluded... Yet Devonport is ideally positioned as a 12 minute ferry ride across the harbour takes you to the heart of downtown Auckland. The Devonport ferry terminal is a mere 5 minutes walk from Pacific Villa.
Devonport village is nestled in the environs of three extinct volcanoes - Mount Cambria, Mount Victoria, and North Head. Mount Cambria was quarried for scoria from 1883 until 1985 and is now a sheltered and picturesque garden reserve ideal for picnics or a gentle stroll. Mount Cambria reserve is also the home of the Devonport Historical Museum. The other Mounts, Victoria and North Head, provide truly breath-taking views of the Waitemata Harbour, and the larger Hauraki Gulf with its many islands.
There are plenty of free local activities that ensure your time in Devonport is never dull. Take a leisurely walk along the seaside promenade and over the two mounts, or follow the "Old Devonport Walk" mapped route and admire historical sites and colonial architecture. Visit the many galleries and the three museums - Devonport Historical Museum, the Navy Museum and the eclectic and somewhat eccentric Jackson's Museum. You'll have fun exploring the WWII caves on North Head, and the safe family beaches of Narrowneck and Cheltenham. For a small fee you can enjoy a round of golf at the local 18 hole course.
Devonport village houses boutique shops, bars, cafes and a wide selection of restaurants. Many of these eateries offer take-out meals for you to enjoy on the waterfront while watching the sun set over Auckland City. Each February the popular Devonport Wine and Food Festival attracts thousands to the local domain beside the sea.
A wider selection of shopping and restaurants is available across the harbour in downtown Auckland. The restaurants along Princes Wharf and the Viaduct Basin are excellent and cater to a wide range of tastes and different budgets. From the Auckland ferry terminal you can cruise the Hauraki Gulf and visit beautiful islands including Waiheke, Great Barrier, Tiritiri Matangi and the volcano Rangitoto.
Devonport... a charming, historic village by the sea.
